Capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits for blocking direct current while allowing alternating current to pass. In analog filter networks, they smooth the output of power supplies. In resonant circuits they tune radios to particular frequencies. In electric power transmission systems they stabilize voltage and power flow.

Larger capacitors like electrolytics usually display the actual capacitance together with the unit (for example, 220 μF).

Smaller capacitors like ceramics, however, use a shorthand consisting of three numbers and a letter, where the numbers show the capacitance in pF (calculated as XY × 10Z for the numbers XYZ) and the letter indicates the tolerance (J, K or M for ±5%, ±10% and ±20% respectively).

The capacitor may show its working voltage, temperature and other relevant characteristics.

A capacitor with the text 473K 50V on its body has a capacitance of 47 × 1000 pF = 47 nF (±10%) with a working voltage of 50 V. The working voltage of a capacitor is the highest voltage that can be applied across it without undue risk of breaking down the dielectric layer.
